Typewriter NocturneEvery line of code should feel like writing poetry.

A real terminal for macOS, Windows and Linux, with the soul of a writing desk.

A real terminal first

Hyper's terminal, xterm.js and node-pty run your actual shell. Exit codes, bracketed paste, input methods and full-screen programs behave as they should.

A typewriter, modelled in 3D

Platen, paper bail, enamel body, ribbon spools, a nickel scale and a gilt nameplate, with physically based materials and soft shadows.

A head that moves like one

One rack tooth per column, escapement physics, a sway on its pivot when it stops, a strike towards the platen with every key.

Light that behaves like light

Inverse-square falloff, Lambert's cosine law, a clean triangle of light up the page, moonlight through an upright window whose panes and slant you choose, and a theatre-curtain pull cord to switch it.

Paper and ink

Six papers from cotton to parchment, as narrow as a letter or as wide as the platen. Freshly typed characters land heavy and settle into print; selected text dissolves like ink and re-forms.

A paper clip for a scrollbar

A wire clip hooked over the edge of the sheet glides and leans as you scroll; double-click a bail roller to roll to the top or the bottom.

An ink cursor

A blot of ink that sinks into the page and wells up again while the terminal waits, inked afresh with every key; or a quill pen the size of the block.

The sound of the machine

Type bars, carriage return, margin bell, the platen ratchet on history recall, the tabulator, in stereo where the head stands.

Input methods welcome

Pinyin, kana and hangul compositions strike keys as you type them; committed text lands as a firm double strike.

Your fonts, with Nerd Font icons

Bundled faces, Nerd Font presets, any installed family, and Nerd Font icons with every face.

The Press

Print a snippet, the screen or the last command as a folio set like a sonnet, on the paper, seal, ribbon and face you choose; keep it in the Archive.
